General information about Torrevieja
Torrevieja (Valencian: Torrevella, meaning the old tower) is a seaside resort located on the Mediterranean Sea, more specifically on the Costa Blanca, 41 km south of Alicante in Spain.
Torrevieja is the perfect holiday resort in south-east Spain. It is 30 km² in size, has about 20 km of coast. This area is best described as a long region known for its beautiful beaches. This makes this area also very popular with the Spaniards who spend their holidays here from other parts of Spain.
Torrevieja itself is situated close to the sea and is surrounded by two large natural salt lakes which are the largest in all of Europe.
These lakes are particularly popular with people with heart problems, rheumatism, arthritis or asthmatic conditions where the “healing powers” of the salt lakes are said to provide relief from the pain associated with these diseases.
The warm climate in Torrevieja soothes the symptoms, which makes life in this part of Spain a blessing.
Tourism is the main source of income in Torrevieja. The seaside resort is very busy during the summer holidays. In the past, however, the main activity was salt extraction from the natural salt lakes (Salinas de Torrevieja).
Torrevieja is easily accessible from 2 airports, Alicante and San Javier (Murcia).
